Make Your Mark-Development

Following my latest research, I developed my initial ideas. Quickly being put of the typographic ideas, I focused instead on the propaganda based idea. The development does not appear to change very vastly however, the slight changes that take place are massive to the actual idea of the piece. For instance the changing of the pointing hand to the thumb pointing to myself and the change of the text from the original poster. Lastly I decided to take a photograph for the final piece rather then a sketch due to time constraints.

Make Your Mark-Initial ideas

Following my research I moved swiftly into the ideas generation stage. I generated a few ideas based around self advertising, as such, the majority of my ideas were centered around a portrait piece.
I felt instantly that two ideas in particular, the ideas of the recreation of the 'WE WANT YOU' American propaganda poster and the typography based poster, stood out to take forward. I then decided to partake in some extra research within these fields in preparation of development.

D&AD Brief-Make Your Mark

In addition to our Digital Skills work we were tasked with completing a D&AD brief of our choosing. Out of the options available to me, the choice was obvious, the Make Your Mark brief. Essentially, this brief was to produce a piece(s) of work that would impress your dream employer. I saw this as an opportunity to create a strong piece for my portfolio that displayed both creativity and skill. The basic idea is to create a piece hat advertises my myself as a skilled graphic design available for employment.
Like any other project I began by researching in to this broad field to both refine and generate some ideas.

Digital Skills-Illustrator Tutorial

Like with Photoshop, I felt that the completion of an online tutorial in Illustrator would be to my benefit. Using some of the skills I already knew, such as offsetting paths, adding gradient, using shapes, etc, I also learned some new skills such as the use of some different pathfinder options and creating a brush in Illustrator.

Digital Skills-Week 4

This weeks digital skills session was more focused on type editing, looking at tracking/kerning, creating outlines, 3D effects and the appearance panel. Both the 3D effects options and the appearance panel were completely new territory to me, yet both were surprisingly simple to pick up and apply.
Using those skills listed above, as well as those taught to me last week, I was able to create this piece in line with a piece the lecturer had created. The appearance panel is probably the most useful skill I have learned this week as, not only does it allow easy adjustments to shape and texts, but it significantly sped up the process of creating this poster and so will help in future work.
